The Window Screen Is Not a Lock: Keep Its Clips and Frame Checked All Year

A screen can lift out from inside in seconds, so it needs an owner who checks its clips, frame, and mesh on a set schedule.

Screens keep insects out. They were never built to hold a person in. On a ground floor, a screen that lifts or pushes out is a second opening, and it is easy to miss because it looks like part of the wall. Treat every screen on the route she might take as part of the house plan, the same way you would treat a door.

Learn how each screen comes out

Most screens sit in a track or hang on spring clips. Open the window and take one screen out to see how it releases. Some lift out from the bottom, some press in at the top, and some need a small tab pressed. Write down which screen comes out which way, because that is the way it can be pushed.

Check clips and tracks every month

Pick one day each month and go window by window. Look for bent spring clips, loose corners, paint chips in the track, and mesh that has torn or pulled away from the frame. Press on each screen from the inside. If it moves more than a slight give, it needs attention that week, not at the next visit.

Split the repairs between owners

Assign each job to a named person. One person checks the clips each month. One person orders replacement mesh or clips. One person tests the windows after a storm or after anyone has been cleaning near them. A repair left to whoever notices it tends to wait, and the wait can stretch past dusk.

Keep the spare parts together

Keep a spare set of spring clips and a roll of replacement mesh in one labeled drawer. Check that the spare clips match the frames before you need them. If you have to hunt for the part during a repair, the window stays open longer than it should. The dusk checks and their order are on the Start Here page.
